Punctuation marks are symbols that are used to aid the clarity and comprehension of written language. Some common punctuation marks are the period, comma, question mark, exclamation point, apostrophe, quotation mark and hyphen. Punctuation is not implemented sufficiently in linguistic theory. This has different causes. The Linguistics of Punctuation emphasis on many linguistic approaches of the past analyzed written language by reference to the spoken medium and dismissed writing itself as an object of theoretical interest.
